The Story Behind the Book

Powerful memoir set during one of Manchester’s most turbulent periods.

Growing up in Moss Side during the 1980s and 1990s, Gavin Smith witnessed firsthand the rise of gang culture, the spread of drugs and firearms, and the violence that earned the city its infamous nickname: Gunchester.

Caught in that world from a young age, Gavin became part of a culture that promised belonging, respect and excitement, but delivered trauma, prison, loss and pain. Today, he shares his story not to glorify the past, but to expose its realities and help others avoid the same path.

Adventures In The Woods

For decades, newspaper headlines painted a picture of Manchester's gang wars.

But behind every headline were real people, real families and real communities living with the consequences.

In Quite a British Hood, Gavin takes readers beyond the headlines and into the streets, homes and lives affected by gang culture.

Surviving bullet wounds, imprisonment, organised crime and the lasting impact of violence, he offers a rare perspective from someone who lived through it and lived to tell the story.

More importantly, he shows that change is possible.

His journey from gang member to community mentor demonstrates that no matter how far someone has fallen, redemption remains within reach.

A Story Rooted in Manchester

It is also a portrait of Moss Side and the communities that shaped it.

From the influence of the Windrush generation and the area's rich history of activism and resilience, to the social and economic pressures that fuelled the rise of gangs, Quite a British Hood explores the wider story behind one of Britain's most talked-about urban communities.

Through personal experience and historical insight, Gavin reveals a side of Manchester rarely captured in official accounts.

The Reality Behind the Reputation

For many young people, life on the streets can appear exciting from the outside.

Fast money, respect, expensive clothes, nightlife and the promise of belonging can be difficult to resist.

But beneath the surface lies a very different reality.

In Quite a British Hood, Gavin Smith strips away the myths and misconceptions surrounding gang culture to reveal the truth behind the headlines. Through his own experiences of violence, imprisonment, organised crime and personal loss, he exposes the devastating consequences that so often remain hidden from view.

This is not a story of glamour or glorification. It is an honest account of the physical and emotional toll that street life can take on individuals, families and entire communities.

For every moment of excitement, there were years of consequences.

For every choice made, there was a price to pay.

And for every life lost or damaged, there remains a lesson that deserves to be heard.
